Very likely you have all heard about Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi's declaration on the belarussian dictator Alexander Lukashenko.
Besides the seriousness of Berlusconi's words, extremely dangerous for the potential democratic transition of Belarus, I have been shocked by the deafening silence on the part of the European institutions. Therefore, with my friends from "JEF Catalunya" (always very active against Lukashenko's regime), I have prepared an email to be sent to the recently named President of the EU Council, Mister Herman Van Rompuy, calling for his immediate intervention in the debate. I hereby attach for your information the text of the letter: obviously, everybody is free to use the text as a draft for a similar email to be sent to President Van Rompuy.
PS: please notice that we have also tried, unsuccesfully, to involve JEF Europe and JEF Italy in this activity. The former hasn't replied to our proposal, whilst the latter rejected our suggestion of joint activity. A true pity, in my opinion, and a wasted opportunity.

Dear President,
The recent visit of the President of the Italian government, Silvio Berlusconi, to Minsk (Belarus) has transformed into an incredible defence of President Alexander Lukashenko, a man that the European Union defines as "the last European dictator" and "persona non grata on European soil". As you well know, Berlusconi has praised Lukashenko, stating that "the people love him, as shown by the latest election results, which are recognized the world over."
The words of President Berlusconi are not just offensive towards the Belarusians that suffer under the regime established by Lukashenko, but also for the rest of Europe that believes in liberty and defend democratic values.
Nevertheless, in our opinion the deafening silence on the part of the European institutions is even more serious: Ludz Gullner, spokesperson of the High Representative for foreign policy of the EU, Catherine Ashton, has made no declaration beyond "no comment" on the part of the Council.
JEF - Young European Federalists of Catalunya, as a Europhile organization that promotes the defence of democracy, and which has always actively condemned the Lukashenko regime, calls for immediate public declarations denouncing the Belarusian dictatorship and the declarations of President Berlusconi, establishing a clear line on the part of the EU in favour of democracy and human rights.

Gentile Presidente,
la recente visita del Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri italiano Silvio Berlusconi a Minsk (Bielorussia) si è tramutata in un incredibile spot in favore del Presidente Alexander Lukashenko, presonaggio che l'Unione Europea definisce "ultimo dittatore europeo" e "persona non gradita sul suolo europeo". Come saprà bene, il Presidente Berlusconi ha elogiato il presidente Lukashenko, affermando che “il popolo lo ama, come dimostrano gli ultimi risultati elettorali, riconosciuti da tutto il mondo”.
Le parole del Presidente Berlusconi non sono offensive solo per i bielorussi che subiscono il regime di Lukaschenko, ma anche per tutti noi europei che crediamo nei nella libertà e difendiamo i valori della democrazia.
Senza dubbio è però forse ancora più grave, a nostro avviso, il silenzio assordante delle istituzioni europee in merito alla vicenda: Ludz Gullner, portavoce della Alta Rappresentante per la Politica Estera dell'Unione Catherine Ashton, ha dichiarato nientemeno che "non c'è nessun commento" da parte del Consiglio.
JEF Catalunya in quanto associazione europeista che difende i valori della democrazia e sempre molto attiva nella condanna del regime di Lukashenko, le chiede di affermare pubblicamente ed immediatamente la sua censura della dittatura bielorussa e delle dichiarazioni del Presidente Berlusconi, stabilendo così una linea chiara della UE in favore della democrazia e dei diritti umani.

Estimado Presidente,
la reciente visita del Presidente del Gobierno italiano Silvio Berlusconi a Minsk (Bielorrusia) se ha transformado en una increíble defensa del Presidente Alexander Lukashenko, hombre que la Unión Europea define como "el último dictador europeo" y "persona non grata en el suelo europeo". Como Usted bien sabrá, Berlusconi ha elogiado al presidente Lukashenko, afirmando que “el pueblo le ama, como demuestran los últimos resultados de las elecciones, reconocidos por todo el mundo”.
Las palabras del presidente Berlusconi no son solo ofensivas hacia los bielorrusos que sufren el régimen establecido por Lukaschenko, sino también hacia al resto de los europeos que creemos en la libertad y defendemos los valores de la democracia.
Sin embargo, es mas grave todavía, en nuestra opinión, el silencio ensordecedor de las instituciones europeas: Ludz Gullne, portavoz de la Alta Representante para la política exterior de la Unión Catherine Ashton, ha declarado nada menos que "no hay ningún comentario" de la parte del Consejo.
"JEF - Jóvenes Europeos Federalistas de Catalunya" como asociación Europeísta que promueve la defensa de la democracia, siempre muy activa en la condena del régimen de Lukashenko, le pide declarar públicamente e inmediatamente su condena a la dictadura bielorrusa y a las declaraciones del Presidente Berlusconi, estableciendo una linea clara de la UE en favor de la democracia y de los derechos humanos.
